No-Be Summer Staff Member Receives National Medal of Merit
Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco summer camp staff member Rick Darden, then 15 years old and a member of Troop 437 in Roslyn, PA, recently received the National Medal of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America.
With Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca in attendance, Judge John Braxton read the following citation at the Troop 437 Court of Honor:
"On March 18, 2010 Rick was having dinner at his friend Dan's house. Rick and Dan finished their dinner and went to get their scooters, when they heard loud coughing followed by gasps for air from Dan's brother Zach. Rick assessed the situation, went behind Zach and performed the Heimlich maneuver. After three thrusts a piece of chicken was dislodged and Zach was able to breathe again. Rick indeed exemplified the Boy Scout Motto "Be Prepared."
Troop 437 has been going to NoBe since 1996. Rick credits his Scout training for his quick actions. He looks forward to rejoining his camp staff family during the summer of 2011. Congratulations Rick!
