The OcSoBeBon – NoBe’s New Older Scout Program!Published in Summer Camp, Ocsobebon by Marc on 27 Jun, 2008
Our new older scout award takes advantage of everything camp has to offer, and lands surrounding it. Information will be distributed to scouts and leaders looking to take part in this exciting program Sunday after dinner!
Description:
The OcSoBeBon is the new veteran scout program at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco In order to earn this award, you must complete five requirements from each respective level (A, B, or C). Each requirement must be witnessed and initialed by a staff member. Once the 15 requirements are met, Scouts will be given coordinates to find a geocache which will lead to the award. All BSA rules such as the buddy system must be followed when completing these tasks. Most of the requirements can be completed at any time though some must be completed during program hours, see the specific area for information. If you are able to meet these requirements you will be awarded a special neckerchief, as well as a place on the OCSOBEBON plaque. Keep in mind successful completion of this is not guaranteed.
Good luck!
Name
The oc - so - be - bon is NoBeBoSco backwards. It doesn't mean anything (but it sounds very cool and exciting!).
Who Can Participate
Scouts 4th year or 14 and older can participate. Leaders are also encouraged to take part, in order to leave camp safely which they scouts may opt to do, they need to be accompanied by two over 18 year olds.
How It Was Designed
It was designed to have minimal time conflict for the scouts. It is also not resource or staff intensive allowing it to be done at the Scouts pace.
Time Needed
It is an open program that is designed to be completed during times the scouts aren't taking merit badges. There is nothing that needs to conflict with merit badge time. If they could devote an hour or two a day to it, possibly back to back for hiking, then they should be able to complete it.
How To Get Information
After dinner on Sunday night when the leaders meeting is taking place there will be an informal meeting where scouts can get information. They will be given the hand out, and introduced to each other in case they want to work together on things. Information about it will also be placed on the back of the camp map to help facilitate the program. They can also see the office for information at any time.
Requirements
Scouts must complete 15 of the 27 requirements:
5 - "A" level requirements which depending on skill level should not take more then 10 minutes to complete. Obviously is you are not a great shot that may take some more time.
5 - "B" level requirements which would be no more then ½ hour to complete.
5 - "C" level requirements which are slightly more difficult to complete and vary from ½ hour to 1½ hours, take into account for hiking and lap times for the mile swim
Some of the requirements can be completed at the same time (i.e. hiking) or close together (i.e. waterfront). They were created with the idea in mind that an average camper who has spent a few years at NoBe and earned a variety of merit badges could complete them. They are always subject to change depending on the response and feasibility.
"Geocache"
Geocaching is a scavenger hunt with a GPS unit. GPS will be given out from the office and scouts will be given the coordinates which will lead them to a location where an old ammo can will be located. Inside the Ammo can will be a number that they can bring back and will be given their neckerchief. This is to expose people to a neat program, and will hopefully take less then an hour to complete |
